The course is divided into 3 modules:

  • Mountain Skills 1: run over 2 days
  • Mountain Skills 2: run over 2 days with a night navigation element
  • Mountain Skills Assessment: run over 2 days with a night navigation element

Most people will just do MS 1 and MS 2 where you’ll learn all the skills you’ll need. MS Assessment is completed by those who are looking to progress to Mountain Leader training courses and those who like to have a goal to aim for.

Mountain Skills is not a leadership qualification, you’ll need to progress to Mountain Leader level for that. Instead, it equips you with the skills to look after yourself in the mountains.

The aim of this course is to equip you with the skills so that you can:

  • Navigate with map
  • Use additional tools e.g. compass
  • Recognise and avoid hazards
  • Navigate in poor conditions and at night
  • Know what kit to carry
  • Know what to do in an emergency
  • Learn how to enjoy the mountains in a sustainable manner
